Water treatment for the metallurgical industry in Ukraine

In metallurgy, several types of activities are distinguished: in some, wastewater is formed, which has a high content of dissolved substances in its composition (coking plants, some hot rolling shops) and therefore requires careful processing; in others, wastewater is formed with a high content of mechanical impurities (oxides, suspended solids, insoluble hydrocarbons), which can be almost completely used in the circulating water supply system.

Waste water characteristics:

Wastewater contains mechanical impurities, waste dyes, surfactants, oil products, phenols.

Applied cleaning technologies:

  • neutralization;
  • mechanical cleaning;
  • upholding;
  • coagulation, flocculation;
  • flotation;
  • biochemical purification;
  • dehydration.

At metallurgical production enterprises, in the manufacture of products, installations are used to prepare purified water from mechanical impurities of circulating cycles, demineralized water for production needs, water for steam production or water supply to hot water boilers, wastewater treatment to reduce the volume of water consumption and industrial wastewater disposal. The reliable operation of the equipment and the quality of products manufactured by metallurgical enterprises directly depend on the quality of the prepared water.

Often outdated methods of metallurgical production require reconstruction or improvement, and in combination with them, changes are required in the technological schemes of water treatment.

The main directions of water treatment plants in the metallurgical industry:

  • partial and/or deep desalination, sea desalination for steam and hot water boilers, waste heat boilers, main process equipment, equipment cooling and other metallurgical processes;
  • pre-filtration of reverse cycle water;
  • preparation of water for drinking needs;
  • treating recycled water using various methods to stabilize or avoid deposits and corrosion;
  • Cleaning of drains.
